    Description

For bid is a SIGNED, original & very RARE 1937 Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii soft cover book, “Copy of the Journal of Elisha Loomis, Hawaii 1824-1826.”  Inscribed on the title page by editor and author William Drake Westervelt, a very important scholar of Hawaiian history and culture!  Book has about 55+ pages of important information.  Mimeograph of similar pages that are bound with three industrial staples at the margin.  Westervelt inscribed the book as follows:  “Harry Norwood Denison Me Ke aloha O, W. D. Westervelt April 23 - 1937.”  Book has purple covers and over 55 pages (all one-sided) and bound with staples.  Front cover has a missing corner.  Elisha Loomis (1799-1836) was a legendary Christian missionary to the islands (one of the first Christian missionaries to arrive at Hawaii in the 1820’s.  Loomis was one of the first printers in the Hawaiian Islands.  This Hawaii journal was written from 1824-1826.  This is a really terrific piece of history.  The book is inscribed from a famous University of Hawaii history professor to Mr. Denison, who worked for the Oahu Railway and Land Company LONG AGO.  Book is very decent and extremely rare.  Privately printed in Hawaii.  Inscription on the title page is in excellent condition despite a missing corner to the front cover (upper right corner tip missing).  Over 55 text pages.  Illustration of an 1820’s Waikiki Beach scene on the front cover of the book.
