    Description

    monkey pod wood.
    Hawaiian Fishhook wall art
Hand crafted by artist Gary Case of Kaua'i. Gary obtains his wood from logs and mills the wood himself. The Monkeypod used in these hooks were from trees found on Kaua'i.
The fish hook, or Makau, was a crucial item to Hawaiian survival. They were carved from shells, bones (including human bones), and wood and represent prosperity and good luck.
Many hooks made of human bone have been found in ancient Hawaiian sites. It is said that powerful mana, the spirit of the soul, resides in the bones. Using a hook made from a bone of a good fisherman is said to bring good fishing.
Monkeypod is a beautifully grained tropical hardwood. The wood is sealed with 100 % Tung oil.
Traditional cordage, also known as coconut sennit, handwoven from coconut husk fibers is used to hang the artwork. The Hawaiians used this material for fish line to attach the hooks to the line. Coconut line is strong and resistant to salt water. Early European and American sailors traded with the Hawaiians for this desirable line, because it was better than the line they themselves had. The hooks average 17"x10"
