1890-1910 ~
Thoroughly hand carved ceremonial drinking vessel
...with old Hawaiian designs including two tiki faces
Beautiful grain and color with warm aged patina
...and glossy high points that only come from true age and use
Very substantial with thick walls and nice heft
Old natural age crack down one side does not affect stability
...and I believe due to the rarity of this piece does not diminishes its beauty or value
...simply part of its age, history, and personality
Dusty interior shows hand chisel marks
Very dense wood...kou?...koa?...milo?...not sure
One lighter area...often seen in these native Hawaiian woods
measures approximately...
7
.00" tall
4
.50" wide at broadest point
This has been a family owned piece for 120+ years...
My great-great-grandfather co-established the
Ola'a Sugar Plantation near Hilo, Hawaii in the 1890's
This ceremonial vessel was presented to him by someone on the plantation
...most probably for a native Hawaiian luau celebration or initiation ceremony
...and may have been quite old even then but not sure of exact age
I find no comparables online or elsewhere and think I've priced it very reasonably, perhaps too low
This vessel has been handed down to me and in my possession for 50+ years...
Now retired and downsizing...time to find an appreciative new home for it
~ Remarkable and rare example of antique Hawaiiana ~
